CHAPTER I

Outside World—Calling!

Noah Quindry, Proprietor of Quindry’s World-Colossal Motorcade Show, approaching his office-trailer across the “lot” at Jonesboro Junction, where the show had just drawn in at the unusually late hour of 2:06 in the afternoon, marveled at the manner in which a person like himself could get cut off for four long days from the world. Thanks to no chance to read newspapers—and no long-distance telephone calls possible.

For exactly thus had it been for Noah since the unhappy day he had talked to Pop Starkweather at Shelby’s Bluff. For in the town of Sisterville, next day, the connecting link to the cross-country long-distance wire had been blown down, due to high winds the night just gone: in the next town, Foleysburg, the people there had never allowed electricity in the town in any form—because of constituting an odd religious sect, though were nevertheless good attenders of “circus”: in the next town, Roaring Spring, there just was no long-distance connection—local only; and, in the town beyond, Pritchard’s Point, the town had apparently not paid its American Telegraph and Telephone Company service charges, and its long-distance service had been cut off.

And as for newspapers, so many complicating things had happened on the show—such huge hops had had to be made between the towns—in one case, 300 long miles—that Noah hadn’t even gotten a chance to learn if War had been declared by Russia!

Some of the performers, to be sure, picked up sparse bits of news on portable battery-equipped radios in their trailers—but they didn’t communicate anything to him: and besides, with the long hops the show had been having to make, they were too much “all in” themselves.

Now, today at last, the show, successfully in at the new playing point, was hooked up to—or at least hookable up to—long-distance, and Noah, approaching his office-trailer where his official phone was, was not even possessed of knowledge that even now Pop Starkweather, of Shelby’s Bluff, was trying frantically to get him!
